Binita Shrestha
'I decided to share my story because the type of cancer I have is quite rare. I hope that my journey can inspire or positively impact someone else’s life.'
Binita Shrestha, a 26-year-old international student originally from Nepal, is courageously navigating life after being diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer affecting her nasal area. She moved to Australia in early 2022 with her husband and currently resides in Mitchell Park. Before her diagnosis, Binita was thriving academically, pursuing a Master’s in Professional Accounting at Federation University, and working as a personal care worker. “Caring for elderly individuals brought me immense joy and pride, as it allowed me to make a meaningful difference in their lives,” she reflects.
Her cancer journey began after she noticed a lump and sought medical advice. Initially dismissed as seasonal allergies, persistent growth led to further tests and a referral to Flinders Medical Centre, where she was eventually diagnosed. Her treatment has been extensive, involving 42 weeks of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. “The hardest part of the treatment has been navigating the physical and emotional challenges that come with such an intensive process, but I’m staying focused on my recovery and progress,” Binita shares.
The side effects of treatment have been a significant hurdle, including nausea, fatigue, mouth ulcers, and a sore throat. These challenges have made daily life difficult, especially as an international student far from her family. “Living with cancer has been incredibly difficult, especially as an international student. The challenges have been unimaginable, trying to deal with everything while being far from home,” she says.
Despite the obstacles, Binita remains hopeful and deeply grateful for the unwavering support of her husband, friends in Australia, and family back in Nepal. “Having cancer has shifted my perspective on life. I've realized that life is unpredictable, full of ups and downs, and nothing is certain. This understanding has encouraged me to embrace life more fully, appreciating each moment.”
Binita chose to share her story to raise awareness of her rare cancer and inspire others facing similar struggles. “I decided to share my story because the type of cancer I have is quite rare. I hope that my journey can inspire or positively impact someone else’s life.” Her courage and resilience stand as a powerful testament to the strength it takes to overcome adversity.
